28. George Gibson's Cane While European explorers and fur traders visited the area in the 1800s, the first white settler to pre-empt land here was George Gibson, an ex-British naval officer. In 1886 George Gibson built his homestead and began encouraging other settlers to come and live around him and form a community. Within two years, Gibson had built a two-storey house, planted 100 fruit trees and cultivated four acres of his land, enough to ship his produce to Vancouver to sell and enticed other early pre-emptors including the Soames, Winegarden and Glassford families. This cane was used during Gibson's later years. 1965.073.01 |

30. Hubert Evan's Highliner Hubert Evans was a writer for over 70 years, and has been called "The Elder of our Tribe" by fellow Canadian writer, Margaret Laurence. As well as being a writer, Hubert Evans was a boat builder and commercial fisherman during the Depression Years, to help supplement his income. At the time, people on the West Coast were making their own double-ender rowboats from material they could gather together from the beaches and the forests. A handful of these sturdy boats remain. Hubert Evans' boat is one of them. 14'7" long, it could also be rigged with a sail. 1977.019.01 |
